Tutoring FAQs

How long does it take to prepare for the AP Music Theory Exam?

It depends on the student's background. In general starting weekly tutoring in September-November is a good idea. A student who has taken music theory exams (ex. ABRSM or RCM), ear training or skills exams, and is reasonably able to sing may be able to prepare in as little as 3 months.

All the being said, more time is better than less, especially if AP Theory is not the only AP exam you're taking!.

Can I start studying for the AP Music Theory exam over the summer?

Yes!!! This is an excellent idea, especially if you know you'll have several AP exams and/or a busy extracurricular schedule during the school year.

It's not possible to learn everything over the summer, ignore it for most of the school year, and then get a 5 on the exam. But it is definitely possible to get the heavy learning done early and rely mostly on maintenance study and practice as the exam approaches.

What can I do to prepare myself before starting AP Music Theory tutoring?

  • Memorize all your Major and minor key signatures.

  • Learn to play all your Major and minor scales (if you play a harmony instrument learn to play cadential chords too).

  • If you're not already very comfortable reading treble and bass clef get comfortable. Websites musictheory.net and teoria.com both have excellent exercises to help you practice note reading.

  • Learning some basic piano skills is absolutely not mandatory, but has been very helpful to many students over the years. Whether you work with a piano teacher, study from an adult method book on your own, or use an app, any familiarity with both note reading AND the keyboard will be helpful.

  • Get comfortable singing, even if you're bad, and especially if you don't like it. Sing along to the radio, sing the song's your assigned to play on your instrument, sing anything, every day.

Can I take the AP Music Theory Exam if I've never studied music before?

Yes! But it will not be the easiest of journeys. I recommend starting ASAP (summer would be better than waiting for Fall) and be prepared to memorize A LOT in the beginning.

What materials do I need for tutoring?

Lessons happen on zoom, so you'll need a laptop and camera. We'll also use Google Jamboards to do work in the lessons and to keep track of your homework. It's best if you have a tablet and stylus. If not at least have printed staff paper and a pencil ready.

You should also purchase Barron's AP Music Theory book, any edition is just fine.

If I register for weekly tutoring can I take breaks during the holidays?

If you've started studying early you can take breaks over the holidays. You may still need to study vocab, practice singing, and/or practice dictation, but with a bit of planning you can definitely take vacations during the holidays.

If you're registered for lessons please let me know about any upcoming vacation plans as soon as possible.

Can I register for extra lessons over the holidays?

Yes! If you have extra time to study during vacations from school we can absolutely meet more frequently.

What if I have a conflict with our regularly scheduled lesson?

Please let me know about any conflicts as soon as possible (at least 48 hours notice, but more is appreciated!) and we'll decide if it's best to reschedule or skip that week.
